Tremendous TOPs

Hi All,

Alright, so there was somewhat of a debate going on, on ChalkBucket a few weeks ago. It was surrounding implementing TOPs like conditioning/skills as requirements to move-up optional levels. I think this is as good a place as any for me to voice my support of the TOPs program. While I don’t think it’s the be-all, end-all of gymnastics I think the TOPs program is great developmentally and can be incorporated well into all levels of a competitive program, and not just for those kids who are trying to move through the elite track.

This first video contains both skills testing and physical abilities. Like I said, I think TOPs provides a great foundation. I’m not saying it doesn’t need to be supplemented to fit everyones individual programs. And each gym will have different kids, different needs, and different areas of weakness. But I think that the TOPs program can be implemented in a way that can really strengthen programs.

This second video is another look at the beam skills testing. I do think that TOPs provides really good foundational routines, especially for those tracking elite. But I also think a lot of these skills should be semi-required basics for kids. Let me know what you think.

What are your thoughts on TOPs, both physical abilities and skills?
