Quick Tip: Layout Step-Outs and Stability

Hi All,

Today I wanted to share a really fast drill that you can do on beam to improve both your gymnasts layout step-outs and their stability. I have to be honest, the first time I saw this drill I wasn’t sure what I thought of it. There were things that I liked and things that I didn’t (like with a lot of drills). But the more I tried it myself, and the more I had gymnasts do it, the more I liked the benefits.

There are two things I particularly like about this little drill. 1) I like that gymnasts kind of have to “find” the beam. Not every layout is going to be perfectly square and teaching gymnasts how to figure out how to land when things aren’t perfect is important. 2) I like that the kids are landing on one foot. It takes a lot to stabilize that kind of landing, and I think most gymnasts don’t do enough drills for it, and enough drills to keep the weight over the front leg.

I hope this drill goes well for you!
