A Few Thoughts on Kipping

Hi All,

Today I thought that I would share a few videos (and my thoughts) on kips. As we move into the off season this is a good time to play around and experiment with new drills and progressions. We have a little bit more time here, so if you’ve been wanting to try something new, now is the time to do it.

This first video has some great progressions for glides. Watch the part at 0:28 when Neil Resnick talks about the strength necessary for a glide. There are lots and lots of progressions you can do that don’t require as much strength (example at 5:50). If your gymnasts aren’t strong enough to hold their shapes correctly back up a few steps and build up their strength. I’m also a huge fan of the drill he does at 2:42. Jumping to the bar can introduce all sorts of problems, so doing glides this way to start is better.

This second drill I’ve actually found VERY useful particularly in one certain circumstance. If you have a gymnast who is OH SO CLOSE to their kip and you keep saying things like “lean over the bar” or “you just have to get your shoulders over” etc. This may be the little extra thing they need. I’ve had several girls in the past who were OH SO CLOSE for WEEKS and I had them do this drill 5 or 10 times and then all of a sudden kips were made. I’m not sure what it is about this drill, but I’ve seen it work like magic sometimes.

Train hard!

      Hi Tracey,

I’m not sure why you can’t see the second video. I’ve never heard of anyone having that problem before. Thanks for the kind words, I’m glad you are enjoying the content. Here is the link to the second video in today’s post:

I could not see the second one without the link either – just the short clip of single leg jams. I LOVE that drill – we do a very similar one with our girls and I have found the same results – when they are OH SO CLOSE – this definitely gives them the edge.
