Getting off the floor

Hi All,

So today I’m going to talk a little about “getting off the floor.” I can’t even count the number of times I’ve heard coaches say “push ALL THE WAY through your feet,” or “those quick twitch muscles just aren’t there yet.” So I’m going to share some videos today that will help your gymnasts with their tumbling.

back tuck drills

This first video is a FANTASTIC series of punching drills. I’ve used the front and back ones fairly frequently, but hadn’t even thought of the sideways ones. It would be a great warm-up or circuit station. Especially if you’ve already got the panel mats out. And as is stated in this video. Technique is CRITICAL. Make sure your athletes are pushing all the way through with locked knees.

This second video is short and sweet. But I would highly recommend adding mat jumps to your conditioning. Obvious start lower, even with little ones its sometimes hard to get them onto the short side of spotting block. Start with a couple big panel mats stacked on top of each other, and work your way up. But you’ll be surprised how much more explosive it makes your athletes.

Train hard!
