Developing powerful vaults

Hi All,

Today I’m going to share a couple ideas for increasing power on vault. The nice thing about developing power is that there are a whole bunch of ways to do it. The flip side of that is none of them are an “easy fix.” But here are a few ideas that may help.

Drilling front handspring vaults

This first one is an idea I’ve seen several coaches employ, which is taking most of the run out of the vault. This requires the gymnast to generate her power through the technique. I wouldn’t recommend this as a first step, just because if the technique isn’t already there it can build bad habits. But once the general shapes and concept are there, I think it’s great.

This second drill is a side station that I LOVE. How many time have you heard coaches say “get off your hands faster!” or “more power!” I think this drill really helps the gymnast feel what blocking UP is supposed to feel like without having to go over the vault a million times.

Train hard!
