Dance like EVERYONE is watching

Hi All,

So it’s summer, and camp time. And lots of camps do dances as part of their training. I think it’s fantastic. That being said, and I’ve said this before. I’m a huge proponent of dance training year round. There are any number of ways of doing it. Group dances are great, ballet classes are great, and any number of other things. How ever you want to do it dance training will be of great benefit to your kids. Here are a couple dances I think you might like.

This first video is the dances that came out of the GAGE summer camp in 2012.

This second one is a dance done to Super Base. It’s always really nice to pick a song the kids know/get into.

Train hard!

It makes it so much easier

Hi All!

So I’m not actually going to post any drills today. I’m just going to talk a little bit about dance. The most common sentiment I’ve heard about the new compulsory routines is “they’re really dancey.” And honestly I really like that (granted, I wont have to teach them this year). But basically what I would say is that dance training benefits your gymnasts in any number of ways. One of them being that it makes it SO MUCH EASIER to teach them these routines. I’ve talked about this before so I won’t go into too much detail. But I’d say, make sure it’s a part of your program. And maybe more than a one hour rotation ones a week thing. Try to work it in to your warm-ups, your beam complexes etc. The time you take with your dance training and especially your little ones will last them all the way through their careers. You’ll be happy you did it.

also, here are some of the new routines if anyone hasn’t seen them, or wants to share them with kids/parents.

I’ve never found a coach

Hi All,

So there was an end to that sentence that was the title, and that is “I’ve never found a coach who complained of too much time in practice.” It seems like all of us are always running up against a clock. How long is practice? How much can I fit in? Do we have time for that? How long are rotations? So I thought I’d share a couple videos of the things today I wish I had MORE time for.

This first video is one from TOPs camp. Dance is SO, SO, SO important in my mind. And doing some form of dance workout every week is really important to me. But sometimes during season especially when you want to get those numbers in, some things fall through the cracks. And this is one of those things that typically gets lost with me.

This second video is a nice little bars drills, and I’m kind of using this drill to generalize. I’m always debating where to be when I’m on bars. I’m a coach who REALLY likes to spot for shapes, but if I’m in one place, I can’t be in another. So it ends up being a balancing act of moving myself from one actual bar, to various side stations where I think a spot could be helpful. And some drills you just can’t do without a spot.
